25 Fun, Quirky & Romantic Date Ideas in Edinburgh [2024]

by

Scotland’s capital city is without a doubt one of the most romantic places in the country.

So it’s no surprise that there are a ton of fun date ideas in Edinburgh!

Not only does Edinburgh have beautiful architecture, dreamy cobbled streets, and breathtaking views, but it also has a warm, friendly, and fun vibe that will start any date off on the right foot.

Whether you’re looking for a first date to impress or a romantic evening with a long-term partner, this list has you covered.

All you have to do is scroll through and pick out your favourite date!

So from romantic rooftop bars and retro bowling alleys to gorgeous gardens and pottery painting, here are the 25 best date ideas in Edinburgh.

1. Grab a coffee at Fortitude Coffee in Stockbridge

Address: 66 Hamilton Pl, Stockbridge, Edinburgh EH3 5AZ

Phone number: 0131 225 3245

No matter the occasion, you can’t go wrong with a cosy coffee date!

Fortitude Coffee is one of the city’s most-loved coffee shops so it’s no surprise that it’s one of my favourite date ideas in Edinburgh.

It’s located in Stockbridge, a dreamy little neighbourhood with cobbled streets, plenty of greenery, and a small river running through.

Romantic, huh?

House-roasted beans make proper good coffee, and there’s always a plentiful stock of snacks and pastries from local bakers.

There’s very limited seating inside, so you’ve got to be lucky to grab a table.

But if not, just grab a takeaway cup and wander the charming lanes, shops, and walkways around Stockbridge instead!

2. Have a picnic at The Meadows

Address: Melville Dr, Edinburgh EH9 1ND

Maybe you fancy a bite to eat and a chat, but don’t want to sit in for food?

Well, taking a little picnic to The Meadows (ideally on a sunny day) is the perfect solution.

Known to be a bit of a student hotspot, with local university sports teams getting their training in and off-duty students taking a lunchtime stroll, this park is one of Edinburgh’s liveliest green spaces.

Simply pop into a supermarket on your way there to grab a few bits and bobs to enjoy cross-legged on the grass.

Or, if you’re feeling a bit boujee, pack everything into a picnic basket and do it properly on a little tartan blanket!

Ultimate summer date vibes.

3. Wander the Royal Botanic Gardens

Address: 20a Inverleith Rw, Edinburgh EH3 5LR

Phone number: 0131 552 7171

Now this one might require a somewhat rare good-weather day in Scotland…

However, there aren’t many date ideas in Edinburgh that are more wholesome than a stroll around the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Founded in 1670 and covering over 70 acres of land, Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens are acknowledged to be one of the finest in the world.

Beautiful in all seasons, you can wander (hand in hand) through pristine gardens and glasshouses, home to plant collections from ten different climates.

4. Go on a pub crawl at the Grassmarket

Address: Edinburgh EH1 2HY

There are plenty of great areas for a pub crawl in Edinburgh, but the Grassmarket has to be one of the best for a date.

Situated right behind the historic Edinburgh Castle, choose from cosy pubs like The Beehive Inn and The Last Drop to more modern, lively rooftop bars in Edinburgh like Cold Town House.

This area gets really busy at the weekend, so expect to hover around the bar at times when you’re moving from place to place.

If your pub crawl happens to fall on a sunny summer’s afternoon, the Grassmarket always has plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy a nice cooling drink!

5. Get competitive at NQ64

Address: 25 Lothian Rd, Edinburgh EH1 2DJ

There seems to have been a renaissance of retro gaming bars in the last couple of years, but boy do they make for one of the best date ideas in Edinburgh.

NQ64 has just about everything you could look for when it comes to gaming, all under funky neon lights and retro décor.

Think Mario Kart and Guitar Hero, Pac-Man and pinball, and you’re on the right lines!

Plus, the cocktail and craft beer menu is impressive, and the tunes are great.

Challenge your date to your favourite game – loser buys the next round?

6. Go whisky tasting at Whiski Rooms

My favourite is their whisky and cheese tasting – what a combo!

Plus, a bit of Dutch (or Scottish) courage helps when going in for a kiss!

7. Catch a movie at The Dominion

Move over Netflix and chill, Edinburgh has a much better way to enjoy a good movie – The Dominion.

This art-deco picture house is a gorgeous place to watch the newest releases, as well as repeats of old classics.

And don’t worry, you can still have a little movie cuddle, as the comfy sofa seats at The Dominion fit two!

You can even order snacks and drinks from the fully licensed bar before the film starts, to be delivered by sharp-looking servers in tuxedos.

How classy!

8. Go bowling at Roxy Lanes

But Roxy Lanes really updates the whole experience into a fun, flirty date night – with much more than just bowling on offer.

Choose from pool, shuffleboard, beer pong, batting cage, and loads more, all with the option of mouth-watering American-style food and fun drinks, too.

One of Edinburgh’s newest themed cocktail bars, Ballie Ballerson is a date night that lets you release your inner child.

(But with alcohol involved, too!)

Ballie Ballerson is a massive adult ball pit with fun lighting and house and RnB tracks from live DJs.

So it goes without saying that it’s a truly fun night out and an unforgettable date!

Calton Hill is home to many attractions including the National Monument of Scotland and the Nelson Monument (also known as Edinburgh’s Acropolis), making it perfect for history lovers, too.

It only takes five minutes to walk up the hill, and it’s within close proximity to the city’s main shopping street, Princes Street.

And Edinburgh lets you do this from its very own Royal Observatory!

Located on Blackford Hill, The Royal Observatory is home to the largest telescope in Scotland and offers panoramic views of Edinburgh, as well as some of the best views of the skies above.

There’s even a little high street packed with independent restaurants and shops, as well as a local market appearing each month.

Better pencil in a few hours (at least) for a date here!

However, if you don’t fancy sitting in to paint your pottery you can always try one of their home kit options, letting you get creative from the comfort of your own home.

Please note you won’t get your finished item right away, as they take between 7-14 days to be glazed.

At the end of the tour, you even have the chance to create your very own chocolate bar with as many toppings as you like!

Or, as the ultimate test of trust, get your date to pick your toppings for you – and find out how well they really know you.

Let’s hope they don’t pick the haggis flavourings…

The award-winning afternoon tea experience brings tasty sandwiches, fresh cakes, and loose-leaf teas (and champagne if you want it!) to the background of harp music and light chatter.

An afternoon fit for a royal, this afternoon tea is a little on the pricy side.

Housing some of Scotland’s most important exhibits of art and photography, as well as some modern classics, too, this is a gallery that almost anyone will enjoy.

Just try not to use a cheesy line about your date being the finest piece of art in the room…
