Czeching in at Prague’s Coolest Hostel

This February Gaz and I visited Berlin and Prague. During our travels we stayed in a hostel in Prague and a hotel in Berlin. Unsurprisingly we were slightly less excited for the hostel, even though we knew we were staying in a private room instead of shared dorms. However, when we arrived at Mosaic House we were absolutely gobsmacked. We paid such a small price for THIS!? Our Superior Double Room with Terrace cost only £19 a night each!

We soon learnt that Mosaic House isn’t your typical basic hostel: it offers everything from shared dorms and private rooms to luxury apartments. The hostel is a self-acclaimed “design and music hotel” and it certainly lived up to its tagline. Everyone was really chilled out, young and friendly, and you could tell that music was at the core of their vision. Before staying here I was a little worried due to complaints of noise on Trip Advisor because the ground floor of the hostel is a night club/bar. However, although I cannot vouch for other floors as we were on the top floor, I didn’t hear even the slightest bit of noise. In fact Michelberger Hotel in Berlin was a lot noisier.

As well as being really freakin’ cool, Mosaic House is Prague’s greenest and most sustainable accommodation. Or maybe even within the whole Czech Republic. They are the first hotel/hostel in the entire country to utilise 100% renewable source energy. Mosaic House has implemented both passive and active methods to gather and preserve energy, including energy saving lights and machines, insulated windows, solar panels on the roof, and heat recuperation from cooling and their waste water grey water system. So if environmental sustainability is something that is important to you, you know where to go… These guys do it well 😉

The hostel’s exterior was an eye-catcher for sure. You didn’t even have to step foot in the place before being wowed. I mean, there was only three GIANT mushrooms casually hanging outside of the hostel. Statues were also “hanging” around Mosaic House in Mary Poppins style. There was even a giant bee on the side of another building outside of the hostel, though I forgot to snap a photo of it!

Location wise the hostel was pretty central. It wasn’t smack bang in the middle of the touristy Old Town but it was close enough (a 13 minute walk away), and a short walk away from a metro station if walking gets too much for you.

The Room

Now I present to you our room in more detail! It was just stunning. I’d let the photos speak for themselves but even they don’t pay the room justice… Our private room was jam packed full with quirky features such as a smart glass looking into the bathroom and alternative lighting, allowing you to put different areas of the room in the spotlight.

Our huge queen-size bed treated us very well, as did our private bathroom with a rain dance shower. All the expected amenities from a private room were also provided, including a flat screen TV, desk and chair, free WiFi, hairdryer & toiletries, robes, pin-code safe and minibar/fridge. Oh and there was even a sofa!

The Terrace

Yeah we could have just booked your standard double room, but by only saving a few quid why would we settle for the ordinary? And I’m so glad we didn’t because our walk-out terrace overlooking the city was just stunning. The views were faultless, especially on a crisp winter’s morning. It would be the perfect place to have a morning cuppa and brekky in the morning, and drinks in the evening. The superior double also offered a little more room to settle in and more cosy surprises.

 La Loca Restaurant and Bar

Unfortunately I didn’t take many photos of the communal areas of the hostel. But that doesn’t mean that they were in short supply. In fact Mosaic House is home to La Loca, a restaurant and cafe by day, which turns into a bar and club at night. For £7 per person you can get access to a scrumptious buffet breakfast which really hits the spot. You could probably find something a bit nicer and/or cheaper elsewhere but as we were so rushed for time this breakfast was really convenient and just what you need before a long day of exploring!

So there you have it! That was Mosaic House. I could not fault the place one bit. Do yourself some good, (both for your bank account and your happiness), and stay here if you visit Prague. I promise you will not regret it!

If you are considering staying here and want to cut the price even further then look out for regular offers – we booked three nights for the price of two thanks to an exclusive offer we found on Trip Advisor. Pretty neat, huh?
