Speakeasies Paris: 21 Coolest Hidden Bars in Paris [2024]

by

So you’ve eyed up the Eiffel Tower, you’ve seen the Sacré-Coeur, and now it’s time to discover a more hidden side to Paris.

Well, luckily for you, there are some amazing speakeasies in Paris that will help you do just that!

If you’re looking for the coolest speakeasy bars in Paris then you’ve come to the right place because I’ve rounded them all up for you in this article.

Whether you want to walk through a washing machine, sneak through a supermarket, or hunt out a hidden door, there will be a secret bar in Paris with your name on it.

So from classy cocktail bars to basement boozers, here are the 21 best speakeasies in Paris!

1. No Entry

interior-of-no-entry-bar-speakeasies-paris

Address: 20 bis Rue de Douai, 75009 Paris

Opening hours: 7 pm to 11:30 pm Sunday and Monday, 7 pm to 2:30 pm Tuesday and Wednesday, 7 pm to 1:30 am Thursday to Saturday

No Entry firmly deserves its spot at the top of this list of speakeasies in Paris.

The hidden bar receives constant rave reviews and it’s not hard to see why!

Tucked away in the basement of the Italian restaurant Pink Mamma, through a cold-store room and a secret doorway, this bar is as hidden as they come.

You’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise, though, because the bar always has a queue outside!

Wait your turn and you’ll get to enjoy a speakeasy experience like no other.

Anticipate pink panelling, velvet armchairs, and countless ancient bottles of Italian liquor.

The friendly, knowledgeable bar staff will be waiting to help you pick the perfect cocktail for you!

2. Moonshiner

candles-on-bar-of-moonshiner-speakeasies-paris

Address: 5 Rue Sedaine, 75011 Paris

Opening hours: 6 pm to 2 am Sunday to Thursday, 6 pm to 3 am Friday and Saturday

Moonshiner was named after the practice of bootlegging which occurred during the Prohibition.

Inside this hidden bar in Paris, you’ll find a chic, stylish interior and a buzzing atmosphere, often accompanied by live jazz music.

Now, while you won’t find moonshine on Moonshiners’ menu, you will find plenty of other tasty cocktails.

Their menu has three sections (entrees, plates, and desserts) with the taste profiles of each cocktail matching up to the course.

For example, one ‘main’ is the Risotto, a unique mix of saké, Mezcal, and tequila, with porcini mushrooms, rice syrup, Bourgoin Verjus, and parmesan cream.

Another menu highlight is the Carrot Cake ‘dessert’: cognac, cold brew coffee, carrot syrup, and Fernet Branca.

It’s just as tasty as it sounds!

3. Little Red Door

bar-inside-little-red-door-speakeasies-paris

Address: 60 Rue Charlot, 75003 Paris

Opening hours: 4 pm to 2 am

Appearing on the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars a whopping nine times since they first opened their doors in 2012, Little Red Door is a bucket list bar.

While it’s not the most hidden bar (you won’t have to walk down long corridors or into any back rooms to find it), it’s still non-descript enough for it to fit the speakeasy vibe.

Hidden behind a ‘little red door’, you’ll find some truly spectacular cocktails here.

The bar uses a farm-to-glass model to create its menu, which means that they source all their ingredients direct from French farms and producers.

So in supporting Little Red Door, you’re also supporting local!

You’ll get to enjoy their minimally-named cocktails (think Tomato and Carrot) in a cosy environment with dim lighting and a romantic atmosphere.

Just like No Entry, Little Red Door is another spot that always attracts a crowd.

So if you plan on visiting, factor in time to queue outside!

4. Gentleman 1919

sofas-inside-gentlemen-1919-speakeasies-paris

Address: 11 Rue Jean Mermoz, 75008 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 42 89 42 59

Opening hours: 10 am to 12 pm Monday, 10 am to 2 am Tuesday to Saturday

Disguised as a gentleman’s barbershop, Gentleman 1919 is one of my favourite secret bars in Paris.

The bar is named Gentleman 1919 because it was in 1919 that the US Constitution sanctioned prohibition.

Find your way towards the back of the salon where you’ll discover a hidden door concealing a cocktail bar.

This journey provides a true speakeasy experience, and just like in the prohibition, you’ll be met by a large cocktail and spirits bar, as well as a selection of cigars.

The bar aims to immerse you in the year 1919 through its relaxed atmosphere and retro decor, including large Chesterfield sofas, dart boards, and mood lighting.

5. Bambou

man-pouring-wine-at-the-cocktail-bar-at-bambou

Address: 23 Rue des Jeuneurs, 75002 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 40 28 98 30

Opening hours: 6 pm to 1 am Monday to Wednesday, 6 pm to 1:30 am Thursday to Saturday

Bambou is a stylish Thai restaurant, concealing an incredible hidden bar.

Abundant in vegetation, the bar feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of the Parisian streets.

The relaxed garden bar is just the start though!

For the real speakeasy experience, you’ll have to locate the two lounges on the ground floor, one of which you have to walk down staircases and navigate dark passages to find.

Akin to a 19th-century opium den, this secret living room is cosy and subdued with lots of authentic Asian touches.

Here you can indulge in signature and classic cocktails with Thai twists!

Think a Thai Prosecco and an Asian Tini and you’re on the right lines.

6. Experimental Cocktail Club

bar-and-tables-inside-experimental-cocktail-club

Address: 37 Rue Saint-Sauveur, 75002 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 45 08 88 09

Opening hours: 7 pm to 2 am Monday to Saturday, 8 pm to 2 am Sunday

With locations in London, Venice, Verbier, and Paris, Experimental Cocktail Club knows a thing or two about creating experimental cocktails.

I mean, it’s in the name, isn’t it?

While all their bars offer something unique, their Parisian location is the OG and the jewel in its crown.

Opening in 2007, the bar quickly became a landmark for cocktail lovers and that reputation isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

It’s situated in the centre of the city but like all speakeasies, it’s hard to find.

Hidden behind black velvet drapes, only a bouncer and a small gold plaque with the bar’s name give its location away.

Once you’ve made your way inside, you’ll be met by low-lighting, exposed brick, and timber beams.

Friendly rather than pretentious, the decor matches the more reasonable cocktail prices (well, compared to many Paris speakeasies anyway).

Visit here for warm service and tasty cocktails!

7. Lavomatic

laundry-machines-inside-lavomatic-speakeasies-paris

Address: 30 Rue René Boulanger, 75010 Paris

Opening hours: 6 pm to 1 am Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 pm to 2 am Thursday to Saturday

Lavomatic is somewhat of an icon in the Paris speakeasy scene.

Hidden behind what from the outside appears to be a laundromat, this hidden bar in Paris is casual and funky.

To enter the bar, you’ll have to step through a washing machine – but that’s only where the fun begins!

Not only do they serve craft cocktails and fabulous wines but also small plates and seasonal dishes.

Bring your appetite because you won’t want to miss out on trying some of their tasty treats!

Cocktails start at just €9 each and are made with fresh, seasonal produce, with menus rotating quarterly.

Like many speakeasies in Paris, Lavomatic is wildly popular so expect to queue up for upwards of 30 minutes to an hour during busy periods.

8. Mobster Bar

hands-holding-cocktails-by-lamp-inside-mobster-bar

Address: 8 Rue de Crussol, 75011 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 48 07 37 08

Opening hours: 7 pm to 1 am Sunday to Thursday, 7 pm to 2 am Friday and Saturday

Mobster Bar is a Prohibition-style bar which takes its speakeasy theme very seriously.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to 1930s America, thanks to retro decor, a subdued atmosphere, and jazz music galore.

(Even the bartenders dress the part in period outfits!)

Before you even step foot in the bar, you’re immersed in the period.

To access it, you’ll have to enter an old telephone booth, pick up the handset, listen to a message, and find the code which unlocks the secret door.

Once inside, the friendly and passionate bar staff will treat you to spectacular cocktails.

You won’t regret your visit here, that’s for sure!

9. La Mezcaleria

interior-of-la-mezcaleria-bar-speakeasies-paris

Address: 13 Boulevard du Temple, 75003 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 42 71 77 15

Opening hours: 6 pm to 1 am Sunday and Monday, 6 pm to 2 am Tuesday to Saturday

La Mezcaleria is one of the most popular speakeasies in Paris, and it’s not hard to see why.

This speakeasy-meets-Mexican kitchen combines two of my favourite things in life, and it does it wonderfully.

Many speakeasies in Paris have a certain vibe about them (think sophistication and a relaxed atmosphere).

However, La Mezcaleria is more vibrant and upbeat!

Find their hidden bar just behind the INKA Kitchen and you’ll quickly be transported to Oaxaca, thanks to Latin music, colourful Mexican cushions, and strong Mezcal cocktails.

Their menu changes each year but it’s always creative and it always uses fresh, hand-picked ingredients.

My favourite cocktail here is the Libertinaje, a mix of La Venenosa Raicilla, London Garden Beefeater Gin, Chilli Espelette Giffard, Tomatillo, Green Pepper, Coriander, and Lime.

10. Candelaria

sign-outside-candelaria-bar-at-night

Address: 52 Rue de Saintonge, 75003 Paris

Phone number: +33 9 50 84 19 67

Opening hours: 5 pm to 2 am Monday to Thursday, noon to 2 am Friday to Sunday

Candelaria is another fashionable Mexican speakeasy that I can’t get enough of.

Just like Little Red Door, Candelaria also earned itself a spot on the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2022 – and boy does it deserve this accolade!

Walking past, you’d be forgiven for not noticing the unassuming taco shop.

But step inside and you’ll discover creative tacos, small plates, and of course, a secret world-class cocktail bar.

An unmarked door at the back of the taqueria takes you to the low-key shabby-chic bar.

Lit by candlelight, it’s pretty romantic, and if you time your trip right, you might even be met by a DJ!

Here you can indulge in the bar’s signature agave-based cocktails and other creative concoctions.

11. Rehab in Normandy Hotel

rehab-bar-in-normandy-hotel-speakeasies-paris

Address: Normandy Le Chantier. 7 Rue de l’Échelle, 75001 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 42 60 30 21

Opening hours: 6 pm to midnight Tuesday to Thursday, 7 pm to 1 am Friday and Saturday

Situated in the basement of the Normandy Hotel, Rehab is one of my favourite secret bars in Paris.

To find it, you’ll need to locate their secret mirror door, then make your way down a metal spiral staircase.

Once you’re there, you’ll be rewarded with a mysterious bar decorated with all kinds of intriguing ornaments.

The decor isn’t the only reason to visit here though as Rehab is famously the first bar in France to create drinks based on CBD.

So if you’re looking to wind down in style, try one of their CBD-infused cocktails, like Le Pêcher de Pomone.

It’s a tasty mix of Eau de Vie de Cidre infused with CBD, apple juice, verjuice, vanilla Star Anis syrup, and sesame CBD oil.

12. L’Épicier

exterior-of-l'epicier-bar-at-night-speakeasies-paris

Address: 24 Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, 75003 Paris

Opening hours: 6 pm to 1 am Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 pm to 2 am Thursday to Saturday

For one of the most fun speakeasies in Paris, look no further than L’Épicier.

This novelty cocktail bar is hidden behind an unassuming grocery store and is the brainchild of the same creative minds that founded Lavomatic.

Find the secret door and you’ll be met by energetic bar staff, delicious cocktails, and small Mediterranean and Middle Eastern plates.

The bar is decorated with colourful lanterns, sumptuous soft furnishings, and even swing seats for you to relax in.

Order a cocktail (or two!) and soak up your surroundings in style.

Like Lavomatic, this is one of the most popular speakeasies in Paris so expect to queue to get in.

13. Golden Promise

golden-promise-whisky-bar-speakeasies-paris

Address: 11 Rue Tiquetonne, 75002 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 53 40 81 77

Opening hours: 7 pm to 2 am Tuesday to Saturday

Famed as ‘the holy grail of whisky bars’, Golden Promise promises a unique experience that you won’t soon forget.

To find this underground cellar bar, you’ll need to navigate through a restaurant and a further two bars.

If whisky is your spirit of choice, you’ll feel right at home here.

The bar is separated into two areas: the first where you can enjoy whisky cocktails, and the second where you can taste rare whiskies, most of which are impossible to find elsewhere.

Golden Promise’s expert bartenders are passionate about their craft and will revel in helping you pick the perfect drink.

This is one of the best secret bars in Paris and after one visit, you’ll understand why.

14. BaraNaan Street Food & Cocktail Bar

bar-inside-baranaan-street-food-and-cocktail-bar

Address: 7 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin, 75010 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 40 38 97 57

Opening hours: 6 pm to 1 am Monday to Thursday, 6 pm to 2 am Friday and Saturday, 6 pm to midnight Sunday

For tasty street food and cocktails, head to BaraNaan, an elegant speakeasy serving Indian-inspired sharing plates.

You’ll find them behind a hidden door, down a patchouli-scented passageway at the back of a small Indian restaurant.

They describe themselves as ‘the Indian prohibition train’ and they fully live up to their promise.

Your experience here will be soundtracked by Bollywood music, and led by exotic Indian spirits and flavours.

Expect signature dishes like their unique naan tacos, washed down with reasonably-priced Indian-inspired cocktails.

15. Serpent à Plume

sofas-inside-serpent-à-plume-speakeasies-paris

Address: 24 Pl. des Vosges, 75003 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 45 31 77 83

Opening hours: 5 pm to 1 am Wednesday, noon to 3 pm and 5 pm to 2 am Thursday and Friday, noon to 2 am Saturday, noon to midnight Sunday

Serpent à Plume (translating to the Feathered Serpent) is a trendy cave-like speakeasy hidden away down a flight of stairs in a vaulted cellar.

Step into this speakeasy and you’ll be met by a buzzing atmosphere, a young crowd, and live music.

Order yourself a cocktail or two, then settle down in one of their plush sofas and take in the retro-chic décor.

They have 14 fabulous cocktails to try, including my favourite, the strong but refreshing Never Keep a Lady Waiting.

It’s an exciting mix of FAIR vodka, blackberry jam, pear purée, sandalwood water and timut pepper, lemon, acai juice, and absinthe.

Order it and thank me later!

16. Le 1905

seating-inside-le-1905-bar-in-daytim

Address: 25 Rue Beautreillis, 75004 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 42 72 64 94

Opening hours: 6:30 pm to 1:45 am Tuesday to Saturday

Le 1905 is one of my favourite hidden bars in Paris.

It’s tucked away in Vins des Pyrénées, a quintessentially French restaurant with an old-world vintage vibe.

To access it, you’ll need to find a small door to the right of the restaurant.

As well as an intimate, buzzing indoor space, the speakeasy also has a unique outdoor patio adorned with greenery for those seeking a bit of fresh air.

Here they serve a variety of drinks, including cocktails, spirits, beer, and wine.

Top tip: visit from 8:30 pm on a Friday for live jazz!

17. Le Confidentiel

interior-of-le-confidentiel-halal-restaurant

Address: 6 Rue Robert Estienne, 75008 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 53 76 37 38

Opening hours: 6:30 pm to midnight Monday to Friday, noon to 2 am Saturday, noon to midnight Sunday

Le Confidentiel is a dimly-lit restaurant serving some of the best halal food in Paris.

Expect a small menu of authentic French gastronomy in an equally small environment.

The discreet and intimate restaurant is located in the basement of an 18th-century private mansion.

Naturally, the venue is hard to find and it only seats 40 people, giving it an air of exclusivity.

So if you want to snag yourself a spot at this hidden bar in Paris, you’ll have to book well in advance.

If you manage to book a table though, you’ll get to enjoy fine dining from chef Arthur Jallerat, alongside equally fine wines.

18. Secret 8 by Buddha-Bar

cocktail-on-bar-of-secret-8-by-buddha-bar

Address: 8-12 Rue Boissy d’Anglas, 75008 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 53 05 90 39

Opening hours: 7 pm to 2 am Wednesday to Saturday

The appropriately named Secret 8 is one of the best secret bars in Paris.

Hidden within Buddha-Bar, a majestic Asian-fusion restaurant with cinema-style décor, Secret 8 offers a unique cocktail experience.

Their seasonal cocktail menu is globally inspired and their cocktails are served in unique glassware, which is also sourced from all over the world.

But you won’t be able to enjoy their cocktails until you find the bar!

You’ll only find the “door” to their bar after deciphering a code from their social media profiles.

It’s well worth putting in the extra effort to find this one because Secret 8 never disappoints.

19. Anahi

bar-and-seating-in-anahi-argentinian-restaurant

Address: 49 Rue Volta, 75003 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 83 81 38 00

Opening hours: 7 to 11 pm Tuesday to Thursday, 7 to 11:30 pm Friday and Saturday

Next up, we have Anahi, one of the most underrated speakeasies in Paris.

This Argentinian restaurant has gained a rep for being a buzzing place for locals and clued-in tourists to party.

Originally a butcher’s shop in the 1920s, it has a long history behind it, adding to the prohibition feel.

The speakeasy element comes in the form of a secret bar hidden in a discreet alcove at the very end of the restaurant.

Here, you’ll be able to enjoy Argentinian and Peruvian-inspired cocktails that pair marvellously with Anahi’s food.

20. Neuvième Sauvage

bartender-making-cocktail-at-neuvième-sauvage

Address: 20 Rue Gérando, 75009 Paris

Phone number: +33 6 28 26 15 95

Opening hours: 7 am to 2 am

Neuvième Sauvage is a relatively new Mediterranean restaurant that conceals a wonderful hidden bar in Paris.

Covering two floors and a terrace and seating up to 450 people, this large venue isn’t the most obvious place to find a speakeasy.

However, if you head down into the basement, that’s exactly what you’ll find!

This secret bar is very strange in its design (I won’t ruin the surprise) so it’s an absolute delight to discover.

Settle in and enjoy one of their original cocktails, many of which are based around coffee.

21. Spootnik Bar

people-drinking-inside-spootnik-bar-at-night

Address: 57 Rue des Gravilliers, 75003 Paris

Phone number: +33 1 43 56 95 09

Opening hours: 7 pm to 2 am Tuesday to Saturday

For one of my favourite secret bars in Paris, look no further than Spootnik.

This experimental, futuristic bar is unlike any other bars I’ve experienced.

You’ll find it hidden below Datsha Underground, an equally eclectic restaurant with a fabulous French menu.

Run by expert mixologists, the team behind Spootnik know a thing or two about crafting mind-blowing cocktails.

And when paired with high ceilings, mirrors, flashing lights, and a small dancefloor, the bar guarantees a night out you won’t soon forget.

So that concludes my round-up of the 21 best speakeasies in Paris – and what a selection of speakeasies this city has!

There are so many fantastic hidden bars in Paris that you’re spoiled for choice here.

Narrow down a few of the speakeasies in Paris that have caught your eye and create your dream speakeasy bar crawl.

When in Paris, right?!
